Rio Ferdinand: Composed and assured at the back, just as he was in Madrid. Produced superbly-timed tackle to thwart Ronaldo early in first-half but could do nothing to stop Real’s goals. 7

Nemanja Vidic: Came close to opening scoring when he hit a post with a 20th minute header, but couldn’t get across to stop Ronaldo scoring Real’s crucial second goal. 7

Patrice Evra: Booked after 18 minutes for hauling down Di Maria, United’s left-back was pulled out of position on too many occasions and struggled with Real’s pace and movement. 6

Michael Carrick: Made a series of crucial blocks in the first-half as Madrid put United under pressure. Failed to close Modric down for Madrid’s equaliser. Booked. 6

Tom Cleverley: Suffered a knock after 10 minutes in clash with Ronaldo and looked in pain, but played with diligence and discipline thereafter, justifying his selection. 7

Ryan Giggs: Started on the 1,000th appearance of his career, his remarkable industry and reliability, at the age of 39, ensured his selection did not backfire. 7

Nani: Chased the ball down for United’s opener, winning it off Varane before his delivery was turned in by Ramos. Night ended with controversial straight red in 57th minute. 6

Danny Welbeck: Pushed on to Alonso to give him no time on the ball and tested Real with his surging runs from deep. Unlucky not to score when Lopez blocked his follow-up shot. 8

Robin van Persie: Dropped deep to pick up possession and was upstaged by the running and endeavour of Welbeck. Tested Lopez with angled shot after 33 minutes but not much else. 6

Rooney for Cleverley (72mins): Surprise omission introduced too late to save game. 5

Real Madrid

Diego Lopez: Redeemed himself with fine block to deny Welbeck after spilling initial shot from van Persie in the first-half. Powerless to prevent Ramos’s own goal but made two terrific late saves. 7

Alvaro Arbeloa: Former Liverpool defender was booked for dangerously high tackle on Evra and was the perceived victim in the challenge that led to Nani’s controversial red. 5

Sergio Ramos: Calamitous own goal from the Real skipper after 48 minutes, when he turned the ball into his own net under no pressure, threatened to make it tough for his side. 6

Raphael Varane: His failure to hold on to the ball under pressure from Nani led to United’s opener just after the break, a mistake for which Real could have paid a heavy price. 6

Fabio Coentrao: Pushed forward at every opportunity but also found himself pegged back at times by Rafael’s willingness to spring forward from his right-back role. 6

Sami Khedira: Clipped a wonderful ball over the top of the United defence to Ronaldo midway through the first-half but did little to trouble United aside from that. 6

Xabi Alonso: Struggled to impose himself on the game the way he did in the first leg because of the excellent job Welbeck did in denying him space and time on the ball. 7

Angel Di Maria: A contanst threat to United with his movement and probing runs, but his night was to end prematurely, three minutes before the break, through injury. 6

Mesut Ozil: Tested United with his marauding runs and it was his superb flick to Higuain that led to Real’s second goal that ultimately crushed United’s hopes. 8

Gonzalo Higuain: Scooped shot wide of the target after 11 minutes but provided the delivery for Ronaldo to plunder Madrid’s crucial second goal of the night. 7
